Right now, the worst people are the ones saying 'They didn't do enough!' They will be the same people who will be complaining when a fifth team gets screwed in 2015 or 2016. Let me be on the record today, and say that will happen almost yearly. The fact of matter is these things take time for people to get comfortable with. The NCAA College Basketball Tournament did not start at 68 teams, no, they began as a sixteen team tournament. In twenty years, people will probably see 16 teams. Still, the fact remains how do you pick the four teams?
One idea is a selection committee like college basketball. Some people feel this is an awful idea, and I'm somewhere in-between. I can see it being completely corrupt, and getting a team in there that isn't supposed to be there because of politics. Honestly, I would take one representative from each conference, and go with a program who might not be as successful as others. Therefore they are not influenced to take 'their team' who might be hanging around ranked 6th or 7th.
Some people have suggested an RPI-like system, which is probably a horrible idea. There is first the thinking that RPI will just be another name for the BCS. Then there is also the fact RPI is not the end all for college basketball. It does decide a bubble team like Drexel and others last y ear, yet it really doesn't do anything for the top five teams.
The other big question, how do you handle the rankings? I would be ecstatic if they waited until mid-October to have rankings done by a combination of coaches and media members. That way it would dilute the bias, and we would not have the abundance of brain-dead coaches who do not even watch the other football games. This also ensures that nobody has an advantage to start out the season, and if there are three SEC teams on top to start the year, welp so be it.
This is certainly not the end of the college football discussion, and I'm sure there will be something that will put people up in arms. It's exciting to see the college football move in the right direction.
Charlie.
