The Penn State Cover-Up Confirmed. What Now?

People prepared for the worst this morning when Louis Freeh, the former FBI agent who looked inside the whole Penn State saga with Jerry Sandusky. The Freeh Report found that everyone in power at Penn State tried to cover this thing up.    This really did not surprise anyone, but it gave closure that the people running Penn State were the worst humans imaginable.

The Freeh Report itself is 267 pages, and means that most of the men who are still living will be heading to jail for a long time. They knew about everything in 1998, and again in 2001, leading to several children getting sexually abused by a monster of a human being.  But Joe Paterno cared way too much about the illustrious football program and the publicity.

Paterno would still be look at as a saint in our society if he took down Sandusky in 1998. Once again, they found no proof that Sandusky did these sort of things in the 1970s and 1980s, Paterno could have fired his friend and people would accept it.  Instead, Paterno let this monster continue to damage children, now adult lives. Paterno should be looked at as a demon for the rest of time.

The bigger question is what happens with Penn State now?  This obviously is not over, but who gets involved now?

The Penn State football team that will be hitting the field in July were in elementary and middle school when the scandal first got covered up.  Should these players really be at fault here?   They shouldn't be by the NCAA.  Yes, this is a definite, clear-cut lack of institutional control, but the team should not get the death penalty nor lose out on bowl/playoff opportunities.  It's not these players and coaches fault.  It's the administration before them.

What about the university?  People are theorizing that the Department of Education could shut down the university. Because this is wider than just the football team, yet that's really hard thing to do.  There are over 8,000 employees at Penn State, 38,000 undergraduates, and 6,000 postgraduates.  Yes, this is one of the worst things to happen in a public university, but the DOE would be putting eight thousand people out of a job plus 44,000 without a college.  There would need to be a ton in place for the DOE to something this drastic.

There is one thing that Penn State can do to point themselves in the right direction, take the Paterno statue down.  It no longer resembles leadership and pride, rather it shows disgust and shame.
