Brewers-Diamondbacks Preview (7/23-7/26)

We are running back the previews from last season where we feature the pitching matchups, five things to watch and a prediction. Recaps from last series will be added as we are getting rid of Highlights-Lowlights in favor of The BrewCap which are 300-500 word recaps after the game. I am also going to add the road series too because it's the same team and why cause any more work.

Probable Pitchers
Thursday: Mike Fiers vs. Zach Godley 8:40 pm FSWI
Friday: Jimmy Nelson vs. Patrick Corbin 8:40 pm FSWI
Saturday: Taylor Jungmann vs. Rubby De Las Rosa 7:10 pm FSWI
Sunday: Matt Garza vs. Jeremy Hellickson 1:10 pm FSWI

Five Things to Watch
1. Milwaukee pitching dealing with the big Arizona bats - Even though the
Diamondbacks have a record close to Milwaukee, they are a big swinging baseball team. Brewers gave up 20 runs in a weekend series in May to Arizona. Paul Goldschmidt is the president of the Brewers Killer Club. But there are other guys who have seemed to bother the Brewers like David Peralta, A.J. Pollock to name a few. Milwaukee will need to avoid any sort of big inning.

2. Carlos Gomez and the Walk - One of the biggest criticisms of Carlos Gomez was he would never really take a walk. He started to a little bit last year and something this year made him buy fully in. He had eight walks since the All-Star Break. I'm not sure if Gomez saw something that he wanted to change or what. Still, it's nice to see him working on his on-base percentage. Of course, Gomez struck out four times yesterday against Cleveland so this doesn't have as much meaning.

3. Brewers have a chance to make some traction - I know none of us really believe Milwaukee can climb their way back into things, but with some teams losing this week, Milwaukee could make great strides if they could win three of four in Arizona. Diamondbacks have one more win than Milwaukee, but two more losses. Brewers are only three wins away from the Atlanta Braves who are closer to the top than anyone probably thinks at this point. This is a critical series for Milwaukee.

4. Major League debuts never suit Milwaukee well - A pitcher named Zach Godley is taking the mound tonight, and despite not really having a stat to show it, the Brewers really scuffle against pitchers making their Major League debuts. Somehow, they find a way to make him look like Cy Young, time in and time out. Godley might not be any different than the other starting pitching in years past.

5. Late-night baseball! - West coast is my absolute favorite. Nothing better than getting the Brewers on around 8:40 versus the normal time. It goes til nearly midnight each time and just feels different. Brewers Twitter is a little more punchy. I also enjoy it although I didn't work 40 hours in the past.

Prediction
Brewers will take a split here, Friday and Saturday. I am going to not bet on another good Matt Garza start and the debuts as I noted above, never go good for Milwaukee.

Charlie.
