This is such a weird season for the Milwaukee Brewers. If you ignore the week or so where they lost eight of nine games, and say Milwaukee went 5-4 during that time, they are 45-48. Brewers would be in striking distance and likely not trading anyone for the summer. I know winning makes some people upset, but you have to relish in the fact, Milwaukee beat down the hottest team in baseball in two different ways.
Not Player of the Day (Brewers) - Jeremy Jeffress (P): Not a good second half start for one of the best pitchers in the Brewers bullpen. Jeffress ended up getting out of trouble with only one run allowed, but he let in the runner Jimmy Nelson had on as well. It could have been a way worse inning for the Crew.
Player of the Day (Pirates) - Sterling Marte (OF): One of the thorns in Milwaukee's side for the season and for Marte's career, he's been great against the Brewers. He had two hits yesterday with a run scored on an RBI double as Pittsburgh tried to mount a comeback. He did get gunned at home by Ryan Braun, but I will not hold that against him.
Not Player of the Day (Pirates) - Vance Worley (P): He had to pitch after Francisco Liriano was a very late scratch with nick stiffness. Worley sweated like Shaun Marcum did on Sunday afternoon starts when he was clearly hungover. Now, Worley is a bit chunky so that could have been the reason behind it, but he really struggled especially when Pittsburgh gave him a three spot early on.
When The Game Turned - Fourth inning. Milwaukee had tied the game on a Scooter Gennett base hit in the inning before and it seemed like a pedestrian inning when Milwaukee made two quick outs. Then Gerardo Parra works a ten pitch at-bat for a walk, and Jonathan Lucroy hits a go-ahead two-run homer. Milwaukee wouldn't look back.
What to Watch - I hate to say this, but I feel like we are due for a Taylor Jungmann blow up start. It's been so great for him thus far, and I could really see him struggle today. Hope I'm wrong.
Charlie.
