Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down: MLB Trade Deadline

Breaking down the Major League Baseball Trade Deadline in Siskel and Ebert fashion by giving a thumbs up or a thumbs down.

Toronto Blue Jays: 1 1/2 Thumbs Up - On the surface if Toronto becomes a playoff team wins the Wild Card game and goes deep in the playoffs, these deals are a success. If David Price leaves after this season with a Wild Card game lost or worse, missing the playoffs plus the turf starts screwing Troy Tulowitzki leading him to demand a trade, this is a failure therefore that's why I can't fully endorse what they did over the past two weeks. A part of me feels like Toronto might deal Tulo at the end of the year if things don't go well to get more pieces back.

Milwaukee Brewers: Two Thumbs Up - Am I a homer?  Yes I am, but my hometown team did exactly what they needed to do in order for success sooner rather than later. I love the fact Milwaukee ended up bringing back seven players and all of them are not older than 23. Brewers are now building back up a farm system, and they aren't done yet with many different pieces to trade in upcoming August waiver deadline period plus they could make some moves this Winter. Milwaukee is embracing being a couple years out and looking to build on it.

Miami Marlins: Two Thumbs Down - Miami got rid of Mat Latos, Michael Morse and Steve Cishek, all while getting nothing back for them. Just shedding cash instead. Water is wet, grass is green.

Detroit Tigers: Two Thumbs Up - Love what Detroit did here trading away David Price for a vat of players and Yoenis Cespedes for two more. They are going to be free agents at the end of the year and Price wasn't coming back so deal them for assets in the future. Detroit needed a little more of a farm system, and if they get pitching back in a year or two, they will be right back to contending again. Now the interesting part is if Detroit bad again next year, do they think about dealing Miguel Cabrera?  Probably not, but I like to be a troll.

Chicago Cubs: One Thumb Down - I am okay with Chicago not doing any major moves since they don't want to get rid of the farm system they built up over the past five years. Dan Haren though isn't someone that's going to be a difference maker for this team. He has issues with home runs and heads to a home run friendly park. It doesn't seem like this will be a good fit. Yovani Gallardo would have made much more sense.

Kansas City Royals & San Francisco Giants: Two Thumbs Up - It's very possible we could see these two teams back in the World Series again. Both made moves that would help them get to the top of the mountain again. Royals getting Johnny Cueto and Ben Zobrist while San Francisco added Mike Leake who they hope to sign for the future of their team. Giants and Royals showed why they are two of the premier franchises in baseball.

Pittsburgh Pirates: One Thumb Down - For the second straight year heading into the Deadline season, 'Pirates are going to make a big splash, they are finally going for it!' And it doesn't happen with them. They make a couple small moves like getting Aramis Ramirez, Morse and J.A. Happ, but nothing that blows you away. Pittsburgh will hope that's enough to keep them in the playoff hunt for the next two months.

Charlie.
